William Stephens papers, 1781-1818

Collection contains two items of correspondence, between William Stephens and Seaborn Jones, the other from Nathaniel Pendleton to William Stephens regarding the history of the Yazoo affair. The collection also contains a family compact, listing Stephen's kinsman in various public offices. The document is in the hand of William Harden, and bears a note in the hand of Dolores B. Floyd that states, "Copies by William Harden from memoranda shown him by Philip Box, postmaster at Savannah." Mr. Harden and Mrs. Floyd were librarians at the Georgia Historical Society.

William Stephens (1752-1819) was born in Savannah, the son of Newdigate and Frances (Milledge) Stephens and grandson of William Stephens, Secretary to the Georgia Trustees in Georgia and Georgia's first president. Dolores Boisfeuillet Floyd (March 26, 1887-May 18, 1966) married Neyle Colquitt and, after his death, Marmaduke Hamilton Floyd in 1930. She studied library science at Georgetown University and became a library assistant at the Savannah Public Library, retiring in 1943.
